Greek Catholic Melkite Church

The Greek Catholic Patriarchate Parish was established in Beit Sahour in 1891 at the time of his Excellency, Bishop Philip Mallouk, the Patriarchal Vicar in Jerusalem then. The first church was built in the town in 1895 and it was St Michael Church, and the first priest was Fr. Khaleel Abu Sa’da followed by Fr. Elias Sida then Fr. Bolous Antaky. The Catholic sect has become greater since its establishement when new families joined it and this urged his Excellency Bishop Gabriel Abu Sa’da to build our present Catholic Church in 1955 under the name of the Greek Catholic Melkite Church.

He also helped in building a seminary for bringing up the Theolody students in 1958, Besides, he put the base stone for the Greek Catholic Patriarchate School in Beit Sahour. Since that time the Saviour priests followed each other in serving the Catholic Parish in Beit Sahour such as Fr. Bolous Shu’aib, Fr. Joseph Dagir, Fr. Adeeb Badawi . Fr. Boulos Samaha, Fr. Peter Haddad, Fr. Joseph Lagin, Fr. Joseph Saghbini, Fr Mtanios Haddad Fr. Julio Bronella, Fr. Joseph Wakim, Fr. Tony Abu Arrag, Fr. John Nachoul Fr. Sami Al Hayek, Fr. Faris Khlaifat, Fr. No’man Kozhaya and now Fr. Bolous Armaly .

The number of the parish people is estimated about 800 belonging to four families : Abu Sa’da, Awad (Khair) Al-Badd ( Musleh ) and Odeh . Most of them live in Beit Sahour and few of them live abroad .

The most important activies of the Parish are :
1. The Greek Catholic Housing Association ( 1989) .
2. The Scouts Movement ( 1993) .
